 Program
Phillip Glass ( b.1937) String Quartet No. 5  (24 minutes)
Amy Beach (1867-1944) Quartet in One Movement, Op. 89 (14 minutes)

Amy Beach completed her Opus 89 in the year 1929. She drew her thematic material from three traditional Inuit songs. The work begins and ends in a peaceful meditation (Grave), and in between is a joyous Più animato building towards a slightly agitated Allegro molto section.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Philip Glass studied at the University of Chicago and the Juilliard School. In the early 1960s, Glass spent two years studying in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, while transcribing Ravi Shankar's Indian music into Western notation.  Glass has composed music for opera, dance, theater, chamber ensemble, orchestra, and film.
