Please join us on Saturday, February 10th at 5pm at Beattie-Powers Place for a talk on the History of the Hudson Valley Grape and Wine Industry and Wine Tasting!
J. Stephen Casscles, a winemaker at the Hudson-Chatham Winery of Ghent, NY, author of the book "Grapes of the Hudson Valley", and grape grower living in Athens, NY will lead a discussion on the Hudson Valley's vibrant History of Fruit Growing, Wine and Cider Making, and the Pursuit of Horticultural excellence in the 19th Century.
The time period covered will be the mid-19th Century, the same time period as the preeminence of the Beattie-Powers House and Estate (1830-1890). The then owners of the Beattie-Powers Place in Catskill, NY were very much involved in the Valley's horticultural and agricultural scene, which was an exciting time both nationally and locally for fruit and grape horticulture, winemaking & cider making, and horticultural gardening.
Mr. Casscles has been a guest speaker at some of the east coast's most noted botanical gardens, historical societies, and wine societies speaking on wine making, grape breeding, the history of the Hudson Valley, and 19th century American Horticulture. The Public is more than welcome.
After the talk and group discussion, there will be a wine tasting of Hudson-Chatham wines and local Hudson Valley heirloom grape variety wines made in Greene County and Book Signing of "Grapes of the Hudson Valley."
